Setting up our Learners for Success – Learner Leadership and Tutoring (Senior Phase)
The Holistic Ubuntu Leadership Development (HULD) sub-programme is an extra-curricular initiative within the Mkhulise Programme that targets Grade 8 and 9 learners at our three secondary schools. It aims to cultivate personal and collective leadership grounded in Ubuntu values — including respect, accountability, and community responsibility.
In 2024 nine learners from school RCLs eventually completed the programme and were part of the Awards event.
In 2025, with the support of TLOs, the programme was extended to 39 learners who attend10 sessions covering 19 modules spread over the year. Learners are assessed after every six modules.
A collaboration with Zoe Life has added career assessments and guidance to the programme, further broadening its relevance and impact.
The Tutoring sub-programme focuses on supporting learners who are struggling with Mathematics, English, or Physical Science. Initially aimed at Grade 12 learners, the focus shifted in 2025 to Grades 8 and 9 in response to principals' concerns about foundational gaps emerging in early high school.
The programme is designed to be self-sustaining, with learners contributing a small fee, though learners not able to pay the fee are also accommodated based on class size. Sessions are held after school on weekdays and are delivered by trained tutors.
