The Early Years –
ECD, Grade R and Foundation Phase

In 2024, Mkhulise extended its support to the early years of learning.

Literacy and teaching support for Foundation Phase teachers was first introduced at our six primary schools and has more recently been extended to include Grade R teachers as well. This sub-programme also involves collaboration with Subject Advisors who provide support to all schools across the District.

In parallel, seven ECDs which provide learners to our primary schools, were brought into the programme. ECD managers started off with some management training and shortly thereafter, practitioners went through a first round of training on teaching methods - they are now involved in a second round of training focused on literacy and numeracy. Six practitioners have been awarded bursaries to undertake formal qualifications training over two years.

Support for teaching in Maths will start in 2026.

"The Mkhulise Project has played a vital role in supporting the implementation of isiZulu curriculum in Foundation Phase at our school.  The workshops provided by the programme have been very effective with various teaching methods being shared and demonstrated….. The programme has also assisted us in the development of effective classroom disciplinary management skills and has encouraged the six KwaDabeka primary schools to work together thus reviving in us, the ideal of “teaching as a calling."
